sweet baby jesus

the incarnation
God, in human form
the word made flesh
Christ to dwell among us
it changes absolutely
fucking everything

sweet baby Jesus
so innocent
so powerless
so dependent on his mother
because God
became human

I’m afraid
of the baby Jesus
because I don’t like babies
and if Jesus was powerless
that legitimizes
my own powerlessness

and I’m an addict
I don’t like powerless
even though it’s the truth
I often
don’t like truth
either

if I am going
to accept adult Jesus
who I can somewhat
relate to
the incarnation means
that Jesus came

and that it is necessary
if I’m going to live
knowing the incarnation is true
then I must
accept and embrace
the sweet baby Jesus too

Mary-Clare St. Francis is a writer who sounds as boring as hell but who is intimately acquainted with the horrific and the sacred. For a long time, darkness has been her friend, but she now walks in the light of Christ. As a committed Episcopalian, her main contribution to the church is her ability to make the priests facepalm or swear, depending on the day and context. Mary-Clare has a Master of Arts in English and Creative Writing and lives in Mississippi with her four children.
